Screening for acetylcholinesterase inhibition, lipid peroxidation inhibition and antioxidant activity of medicinal plants from Morocco

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), hydrolyzes acetylcholine to choline and acetate, thereby terminating this neurotransmitter effect at cholinergic synapses. Therefore, AChE inhibition is used for counterbalance the deficit in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients. In present work, order find new plant acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, hydroalcoholic extracts from seventeen medicinal species were screened their activity, as well total phenolic (TPC) flavonoids contents (TFC) antioxidant activity using ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) assay, ability inhibit lipid peroxidation. The results revealed that Rumex acetosa, Taraxacum officinaleand Hypericum perforatumextracts possessing highest TPC TFC, most effective terms of inhibition, addition liposomes peroxidation, suggesting those may provide a substantial source secondary metabolites, which act natural antioxidants be beneficial treatment AD.
